Types of Editing and Their Steps:
1. Content editing deals with issues related to the following:
- Organization of the write-up
- Course (flow) of the story
- Sections/Chapters (number, length, and arrangement of each chapter, addition/subtraction of chapters)
- What each character/parameter conveys to the reader?
- Dialogue and discussion
- Plot development
- Point of view
Basically content editing is responsible for major revisions in the write-up and rearrangement of chapters/sections based on the plot of the story or point of view of the characters.
2. Line editing centers around reorientation of the following:
- Repetitions in words and phrases
- Incomplete and imprecise sentences
- Run-on sentence.
- Tone or vibe
Line editing is done to increases flow, and clarity of the write-up. For example, if two sentences
are included one after the other and both are equally important. But, they do not flow well, I adjust the two sentences until they flow fluently.
3. Copy editing centers around but is not limited to the following domains:
- Punctuations and grammar
- Spelling distinctions (Ex: UK English versus US English)
- Addition/Substitution of capital letters, addition/subtraction of hyphens, italicizing of words.
- When numerals must be used and when words must be used to note numbers
4. Proofreading is the final phase of editing before the write-up is published, involving small revisions (if required) in the following areas:
- Spelling errors
- Homophones – words which sound the same but spelt differently.
- Punctuations and quotations
- Missed words specially prepositions or conjunctions
- Redundant spaces between words
Proofreading is a phase that falls beyond the scope of technical editing. My proofreading is done after In-depth editing has been conducted. When I deep edit there are always two initial read-throughs and an option to purchase a third after the author has looked over the edits.
Beta, ARC, and Alpha Reading
When I read as an alpha reader I am looking at a rough draft to flush out the book and give you a second set of professional eyes. While as a beta reader, I look at your edited book as a whole, including plot and tone. Finally, ARC reading is when I receive a copy of your completed and polished book in exchange for an honest review on your choice of platforms.
Please contact me for prices on alpha reading or in-depth beta reading with a feedback sheet. If you are looking for a light beta or ARC reader for your book at no monetary cost to you, I am happy to help as well!
